Undip Global Classroom (UGC) Hosts International Lecture Series on Adjoint Methods, Error Estimation, and Boundary Value Problems

Semarang, April 2026 — The Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science and Mathematics, Diponegoro University, through the Undip Global Classroom (UGC) program, successfully organized a two-part international lecture series featuring Prof. Dr. Victor Ginting from the University of Wyoming, USA. The lectures were conducted online via Zoom Meeting on April 16 and April 20, 2026, and were attended by undergraduate and postgraduate students, lecturers, and participants interested in applied mathematics, numerical analysis, and computational science.

The first lecture, held on Thursday, April 16, 2026, was entitled “Intro to Adjoint-Based Error Estimation.” During this session, Prof. Dr. Victor Ginting introduced the fundamental concepts of adjoint-based error estimation and its significance in computational mathematics. He explained how adjoint methods can be used to evaluate and improve the accuracy of numerical simulations by identifying sources of computational error and enhancing efficiency in solving mathematical models. The discussion also covered applications in differential equations, finite element analysis, and scientific computing, emphasizing the importance of reliable error estimation techniques in modern scientific research.

The second lecture, conducted on Monday, April 20, 2026, focused on “An Application of Adjoint Method for Characterization of Two-Point BVPs.” In this session, Prof. Dr. Victor Ginting discussed the application of adjoint methods in the analysis and characterization of solutions to two-point boundary value problems (BVPs). He highlighted how adjoint-based approaches can be utilized to study solution behavior, improve computational accuracy, and evaluate the sensitivity of mathematical models. The lecture also emphasized the growing role of mathematical modeling and numerical methods in addressing complex scientific and engineering problems.

Both lectures received enthusiastic responses from participants, who actively engaged in discussions and question-and-answer sessions. Topics such as numerical methods, computational accuracy, differential equations, and the practical implementation of adjoint methods generated meaningful academic exchanges between the speaker and attendees.
